Do we need Einstein or Moses?

Both Albert Einstein and Thomas Edison were mentioned during the Infrastructure 2008 presentation, however I couldn’t help but think that Robert Moses is really who we should turn to for inspiration. Robert Moses is the legendary New York Commissioner who built the Triborough Bridge and numerous other highways and bridges, rehabilitated thousands of city parks and pools, established Jones Beach on Long Island, and constructed thousands of affordable apartments, among other things. He is known as New York’s master builder.

Transportation as a catalyst for smart growth

How we provide, maintain and finance infrastructure is a key factor that will influence the sustainability of our cities in the future. The Urban Land Institute has identified infrastructure is a top policy priority as well, and we invite you to join ULI Toronto to hear about ULI’s 2008 Infrastructure Report (see the press release for a summary). ULI’s Senior Resident Fellow Robert Dunphy will be in Toronto share the highlights of this new report, prepared by ULI in partnership with Ernst and Young.

The focus of this year’s ULI report will be the importance of infrastructure to a city or country’s economic competitiveness. Globally, the report looks at the infrastructure trends in Western Europe, Asia, and North America, with special attention to the fast growing urban regions in China and the United Arab Emirates. The report also compiles the results of research on 23 metropolitan areas in North America to determine whether their long range plans are capable of accommodating the large population increases expected over the next 30 years.

The event will focus on how transportation infrastructure can be used as a catalyst for “Smart Growth” In Ontario. The program will be of particular interest to participants in both the private and public sectors who are involved in the planning, procurement, construction and financing of intensified development and transportation infrastructure.
